Geography

Montego Bay is located on the northwest coast and has white-sand beaches edged by flowering trees and hills with palms. The town is also a port and commercial center. Away from the coast you will find long stretches of rolling meadowland.

History

The first settlers were the Tainos natives who lived peacefully in this land. Columbus discovered the bay in 1494 and called it El golfo de buen tiempo, the gulf of good weather. Later it became the main shipping port for pig's lard, Mantega, which earned it the title of Bahia de Manteca (Lard Bay). The name was finally dropped as sugar and bananas took over as the primary exports.

The town remained small till the 18th century and was never seriously targeted by pirates and when taxes were implemented in the 1780s the town took expansion. Today it is Jamaica's second largest city after the capital Kingston and today's economy revolves around tourism.

Nature

Cockpit Country is a vast limestone forest with exotic flora and fauna. There are hidden caves, trails and waterfalls to explore in this wild and untouched region. Many mystical legends originate from here ever since the Maroons, descendents of slaves who escaped from the Spanish, lived to the town of Accompong.

Animal Farm is Jamaica's newest animal sanctuary. Visitors learn about the natural habitats of local fauna and about solar electricity.

The Rocklands Bird Feeding Station in Anchovy gives you the opportunity to hand-feed hummingbirds, grassquits and a dozen more species.
