SLIPPERY SLOPE Carnival Legend lists briefly

Passengers on a cruise ship sailing into Victoria got quite a shock recently when the boat unexpectedly listed several degrees to one side causing water from swimming pools on upper decks of the Carnival Legend to spill onto balconies. YouTube footage from passengers shows dishes breaking, swimming pools draining, and people holding onto poles and each other. (Video)

The ship was on a week-long cruise to Alaska on Aug. 29 when a technical problem with the steering gear caused it to list about eight degrees, Carnival Cruise Line told the newspaper.
The world’s biggest cruise ship was transporting 2,000 passengers and crew, but only minor injuries were reported.
“At no point were guests or crew in danger," spokeswoman Jennifer De La Cruz said in a statement.
After three or four minutes, the ship was right side up again.
The Carnival Legend docked in Victoria two hours behind schedule, and no one was permitted to go ashore, according to the statement.
It has been reported that the turning valve in one of the ship's four engines failed, causing the ship to make a hard starboard turn and listed 30 degrees to the port side, only 10 degrees away from capsizing the vessel.
This caused hundreds of dishes to fall over and break and caused both pools to drain out and items to be thrown off the deck. Passengers were directed by crew members to all stand on the left side of the ship to even out the listing. Captain Giuseppe Gazzano had to manually control the ship towards Victoria. There were no reported serious injuries but the ship arrived at Victoria two hours behind schedule."
The vessel arrived as planned in Seattle on Tuesday.
