The Ryder Cup, one of the world’s greatest golf competitions takes place this year at Hazeltine National golf club in Chaska, Minnesota from September 30 to October 2. To celebrate Mouton Cadet as the official wine of the 2016 Ryder Cup, Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. has created red, white and rosé limited editions and has partnered with wine aficionado and renowned course architect, Robert Trent Jones Jr. who designed the bottles.

Even if you and your clients can’t make the trip to the mid-west you can sample these special wines at selected spots in Canada. In Quebec, they are available in limited quantities at La Cage Brasserie Sportive locations. In Ontario, Angus Glen Golf Club is your one and only source.
I suggest you make a day of it at Angus Glen. The club that has hosted the 2002 and 2007 Canadian Open and, more recently, the 2015 Pan Am Games on its North and South championship tracks.
Angus Glen, owned by the Stollery family, opened in 1995. That same year, Golf Digest ranked it “best new course in Canada.”
I played the Angus Glen’s South Course with Sebastien Ouellet, export manager for Canada at Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. After a heck of a lot of double bogies on my part, Ouellet hosted our small group to a delicious lunch, each course paired with the Ryder Cup wines.
The vintage 2014 red Bordeaux is a mix of mainly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec—delicious with Provence-style lamb stew or Beef Wellington. The white is fruity with hints of grapefruit and peach. My favourite was the elegant rosé that goes well with tuna tartar, sushi or even a raspberry tart. Each of these wines costs less than $60 per bottle or about $15 a glass at Angus Glen’s Silo restaurant.
The Ryder Cup is a biennial men's golf competition between teams from Europe and the US Every two years the venue alternates between courses in the US and Europe. Team captains for 2016 are Davis Love III and Darren Clarke.
The relationship between Mouton Cadet and The Ryder Cup began in Europe at the 2014 tournament played at Gleneagles, Scotland. The tie-in with Robert Trent Jones, Jr. seems like it was meant to be. Jones began his career as a caddie or cadet for his dad, Robert Trent Jones, Sr., who just happened to be the designer of Hazeltine. On the bottle of the special cuvée, Jones Jr. has made a sketch of a caddie that serves as a tribute to both his father and Baron Philippe de Rothschild.
“I am extremely honoured to partner with Mouton Cadet on the design of this bottle,” said Jones.
“Wine, like golf, is about passion, respect for nature, etiquette and sharing moments in life. A golf course architect and a winemaker share a similar approach to their work: cultivating the land they are given, being true to the environment, enhancing the most pleasing elements of a landscape or a wine, providing either course challenges or tasting pleasures. The Ryder Cup brings together great golfers for a competition where team spirit means more than individual performance, exactly as blending wine brings more than one single varietal to create a special cuvee.
