“First time in Cuba”
This hotel is a bungalow style design with nothing higher than a second floor....just saying. The first two rooms they gave us smelled bad and were pretty tired looking. We asked for a room in the renovated part of the resort and were told that IS the renovated area. Third room was better and we were happy with it. It was palm frond trimming time and we enjoyed the friendly workers that we met and appreciated the fresh coconuts/coconut water they prepared for us as well as the hats/baskets they wove out of the leaves. My biggest reservation about a holiday in Cuba was the reviews I've read about the food. We were pleasantly surprised. The food in the buffet and the snack bar was consistently very good. The coffee in the main buffet was consistently bad. Always just warm and very disappointing. We would make a special trip to the snack bar restaurant just for coffee because they used an espresso machine and the coffee was always fresh, hot and delicious. One complaint in the buffet....cleanliness. The tables have a plastic looking runner on them that only gets brushed off and looks quite grimy. It's extremely chaotic in the buffet and not a lot of wiping down happening between guests at the tables. The a la cartes were excellent...the food, atmosphere, wine, service....all excellent in our experience. We tried all the a la cartes with the exception of Mexican. At two restaurants we had lobster....perfect. The beach area was very nice....could walk right out into the ocean quite comfortably. Enjoyed the pools as well....particularly "Abel" who offered reflexology each day by the pool. Best money I spent on the entire holiday...very good professional reflexology. One thing....the drinks in this resort (other than the wine being served), were the worst we've ever had at any resort we've been to. They were super strong and if you were in the main lobby bar, very inconsistent never being poured the same way twice. We stayed here the last week of February 2015. Lots of families as well as people in their 50's and up. Not much for the young singles crowd....just saying.
The strong points Food, location/beach, staff, rooms and resort bathrooms were always clean. The weak points Cleanliness of the buffet tables, lobby and main bar and the outside area surrounding the main lobby needs regular cleaning. Everything from tables, chairs and the water both in and surrounding the hotel lobby needs regular upkeep. Some tired rooms.

“#1 Beaches but Reno's required”
Best Beaches we've experienced are in Varadero. Staff are friendly and many have sad stories to tell. Wages are low, and prices are the same for them as us. So happy when you tip, be kind. Food is mediocre at best but the Romantico el la carte was very good. The spa was great and 1/2 off discounts given if stay is 7 days or more. Pool is very nice, lots of palm trees, private decks, swim up bar, but care required for smaller kids it has many deep areas. Biggest complaint would be the room, no outside lights, couldn't lock the patio door, fridge given was 110V but only 220V in room, no bathroom door, floor tiles broken. Not a 5* except for the beach. And that's why we went.
The strong points Beaches, Staff The weak points Room. Food mediocre at best.

“2.5* at best, on a beautiful beach”
the hotel is becoming run down by the day. What used to be beautiful grounds and buildings are observed to deteriorate in the course of a 1 week stay. The management and attention to detail is absent. The beach alone is a drawing feature. The meals and buffets are adequate (avoid the Japanese). Room cleaning service was friendly, but again the rooms are slipping into 2*. The beach though beautiful is not kept up like a 5* should mandate. Beach chairs are sagging, there are few side tables, huts are falling apart and the beach bars are of questionable sanitation. We enjoyed our week getaway from technology, but should you need to stay in touch with the world, be warned that the internet was unavailable most days and there are only 3 computers for pay in a room by reception (no wi-fi).
The strong points beautiful beach The weak points I would have been pleased with the stay if it were labeled a 3* and I had paid a 3* price. Rather it is touted as a 5* which is delusional.

“Lovely Resort”
The beach is amazing, the staff are very friendly and helpful. The only thing that wasn't perfect was the food, it was quite inconsistent and sometimes questionable in safety. Beautiful, well-maintained gardens.
The strong points Beach, staff, location, gardens The weak points Dated bathrooms, less than delicious food

“Great vacation”
Overall a nice family resort. We have a 16 month old and was upgraded to a family suite. They have 2 children's play areas with staff if you need some alone time. We also used the nanny service in the evenings so we could do some quiet dinners. Maja was amazing! Food was good and sit down establishments were very good. I would return
The strong points Maja the nanny The weak points Room service was slow

“Great resort!”
Travelled here with my husband and another couple. We had a great time and would go back for sure! The food at the A La Cart restaurants was really good. Buffet was average and the beach was beautiful. Staff was friendly and rooms were nicely decorated and comfortable.
The strong points Beach was great, A la cart restaurants are fantastic. We loved them all! The weak points Would of been nice to have wifi in the rooms

“Royal Service ya'll!”
Best hotel in Varadero probably.
The strong points Had the Royal Service package. This was unreal. We had our own butler, 24/7 room service and the food after hours was just as good as during the day! Butler is the go to guy, he gets everything done, and whatever you need he gets you. The weak points Nothing.

“Highly recommend!”
I just returned from a week at the Paradisus Varadero (not Royal Service)...and would highly recommend this resort. While it was not my first time in Cuba, it was my first time in Varadero. This was a beautiful resort - the rooms could use a little updating, but they were large enough and very well laid out. The food at the buffet was good and there was a good variety of fresh veg for salads. Definitely go for the omelet station and the station where they grill your meat for you. The a la carte restaurants are all very good, the only one we didn't try was the Italian as it was closed for renos. The beach was incredible, and quite private and just steps from our room (building 27)...didn't even need shoes to get there! The staff was friendly and helpful - with or without tipping.
The strong points Beach, staff, a la carte restaurants The weak points Slightly tired rooms and bathrooms

“A quick getaway”
The lobby is as expected for a Melia chain. Check-in was quick and room was ready when we arrived even though check-in wasn't until 3pm (we arrived at noon) We booked an ocean view room for 4 days as we were celebrating our anniversary. The staff was very helpful and nice and we were helped to our room. The location of the room was great...on the beach and near all the restaurants. The room however was quite dated. The paint was peeling off the walls, tub/shower was discoloured, appearance of mould in bathroom, lamps were broken etc...we asked for an upgrade but there was nothing in royal service with an ocean view. Overall I would not consider this a 5 star unless you stayed in Royal Service and even then not sure the value for the money is there.
The strong points The bar staff and restaurant were amazing. Bar on the beach was great. The weak points The rooms are not 5 star, even for Cuba. Lots of sand fleas. A la carte reservations made by 1 person so lines were long.
