Geography

Negril is the most western town of the country with high cliffs and white-sand beaches edged by palm forests. The town is also a port. Away from the coast you will find long stretches of wetlands with exotic birds and crocodiles.

History

Like many other Jamaican towns, since the early 1700s, isolated Negril started as a shipping port with bad roads and large swamp lands. Legends says the pirate Calico Jack Rackham was captured near here after consuming vast quantities of rum. For years, this sleepy town stayed peaceful and undisturbed until it was discovered by the sixties “flower power” children.

Negril has developed with environmental issues in mind. Marine parks and several eco-friendly development projects sprung up. Now it is a huge resort town but still in a beautiful setting.

Nature

Booby Cay is where the rare blue-footed booby birds breed and portions of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea were filmed.
