Los Cabos' main attraction is its natural surroundings. Its beaches offer incredible landscapes as well as facilities for all kinds of water sports. Many of them are located on El Corredor, an 18 mile stretch of sea coast linking San Jose and Cabo San Lucas. Some of the best beaches include:

Playa Azul
Excellent for surfing

El Chileno
Beautiful site located on the Nautical Corridor that includes an enormous strip of beach ideal for snorkeling.

El Medano Beach
Its gentle waves allow certain water sports to be practiced, including banana boats and kayaking. The clear, transparent waters also make this place ideal for scuba diving.

Palmilla
Set in the nautical corridor amid spectacular surroundings, this beach is famous for its beauty, azure waters and white sand. It is excellent for windsurfing.

Playa del Amor
If you going out to the rock arch, ask the captain of the boat to stop for a few moments between the Los Frailes rock formations where Playa del Amor can be seen hidden away. This is a lovely place for swimming, diving, and sunbathing.

The climate is dry year-round, with an average temperature of 24 C. Los Cabos claims to have about 300 days of sunshine annually. The climate is much cooler from December through March. Average annual rainfall is 25.4cm, most with occurring during the months of September and October.

The Baja California region is geographically separated and isolated from the mainland. Los Cabos' (the Capes) geography is diverse and beautiful, consisting of unspoiled desert landscape, white sandy beaches and dramatic rock outcroppings.

"El Arco," a distinctive rock arch that sits at the tip of Land's End in Cabo San Lucas and represents the precise spot where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez, is Los Cabos' most famous geographic landmark.

It was originally occupied by nomadic hunter-gatherers groups called Guaycura. Very little testimonies remain of their presence except for a few cave paintings. The Spanish soon conquered the region and pirate attacks soon followed. Besides the cargo ships from the orient, pirates were attracted by the discovery of pearls in the Sea of Cortez.

Without a stable water source, the fishing towns of Los Cabos remained relatively undeveloped till the 1930s. Baja California Sur was raised to the category of a state in 1974, when tourist resorts such as Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo were developed. It remains one of the states with the lowest population density.

Winter attractions include whale watching as the whales reach the waters of the Pacific from the western beaches of Cabo San Lucas.

Nature enthusiasts will enjoy the narrow canyons of Sierra de la Giganta and the Sierra de la Laguna, a mountain range rising up in the north of the Los Cabos region, home to a vast number of endemic species.

Cabo Pulmo has the only coral reef in the state of Baja California. The reef attracts many colourful tropical fishs and algaes, and the whole place is a submarine national park with an area of 7,111 hectares. You can dive here without affecting the species living on the reef!

San Jose Estuary is located in the far south of the hotel zone, where bird lovers will enjoy this nature reserve, to which approximately 200 species from Rio San Jose emigrate.

The San Jose Swamp, next to San Jose del Cabo, is a salt and fresh water lagoon separated from the sea by a small sandbar. This body of water covers an area of 50 hectares and large numbers of palm trees surround it. It is also inhabited by various species of birds, reptiles, and mammals.

For an interesting activity you can try to find hot springs that bubble out of cracks in the mountainside. The best way to find them is to talk with the locals.

In just a few years, Los Cabos has become a major golf destination in Latin America. Los Cabos hosts the PGA Senior Slam and has earned its place in the international golf community. Its 207 holes designed along the sea horizon and the desert landscapes make this destination unique. Some favourite courses are:

Cabo del Sol Golf Course
Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this 18-hole golf course has marvellous views of the Sea of Cortes likely to distract even the most well traveled golfer.

Cabo Real Golf Course
The main feature of this complex is its clubhouse and 18-hole 72 par golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones II.

El Dorado Golf Course
This 18-hole golf course designed by Nicklaus has started to become a favourite among golfers. It has six holes overlooking the Buenos Aires beach with spectacular sea views, with the remainder distributed among inland valleys and canyons.

In San Jose del Cabo, you can celebrate the town’s Patron Saint day with the locals on March 19. The festivities include a fair, dancing and fireworks. In the nearby town of Todos Santos on Oct. 12, you can witness the celebration of the Virgin of Pilar, an annual event of music and dance.

Los Cabos International is located outside of San Jose del Cabo and will take approximately 30-45 minutes to travel to Cabo San Lucas. From the airport you can hire a taxi or transfer van for a more reasonable price. Once at destination, taxis are available but expensive. Renting a car is best to get around. There are bus routes between the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose. Some hotels offer shuttle services.

Los Cabos is located just 152 km outside of La Paz. Take the trans-peninsular highway. You can also reach Los Cabos via Pichilingue on two ferries from Mazatlan and Topolobampo.

Los Cabos is renowned for its sports fishing, since the junction between the Sea of Cortes and the Pacific Ocean produces an abundance of fish such as grouper, dorado, amberjack and sailfish, among others. But it is really known as the world capital of marlin fishing. Boats can be rented to take you to such places out at sea as El Chileno and Olamilla.

Los Cabos Cultural Center
This center served as a refuge of US citizens during the US-Mexican War of 1847. The pink, colonial style building contains a small collection of photographs, fossils and replicas and indigenous cave paintings.

San Jose del Cabo and San Jose Mission
Walking along the lovely boulevards and plazas you will discover colonial style buildings and beautiful gardens. Artists thrive here in this very friendly town. Visitors can ride mules or bicycles to visit the church of the San Jose Mission founded in 1730 by the Jesuits Jose de Echeverria and Nicolas Tamaral. Above the church entrance, built in 1940, is a scene of the martyrdom of Father Tamaral when he was killed by the Pericu Indians.

Museo de las Californias
This small museum offers a collection of artifacts, maps, tools, photographs and journals that date back to the expeditions of Cortez in the 1500’s. This museum is one of the first to show a collection whose main purpose is designed to preserve the history of this area.

Pasado Marina de Museo
The walls are covered with the works of taxidermists while a variety of sharks and tuna hang from the ceiling. Even if you’re not a fisherman this museum presents interesting views of local species that you may have never seen before.

Estuary of San Jose
This freshwater lagoon is now a game reserve with nearly 200 bird species. Once roamed by pirates in search of fresh water, you can rent kayaks to explore the lagoon and its feathered friends. Who knows, you might stumble across a lost treasure.

The Old Lighthouse at Cabo Falso
Tumbledown building that recalls the port's past. It is built on small hill overlooking part of the bay and its quays. It can only be accessed on horseback or all-terrain vehicles which can be rented.

El Arco
A boat ride will take you to these enormous blocks of rock, located at the junction between the Pacific and the Sea of Cortes. In addition to the spectacular landscape, it is quite common to see groups of sea lions and seals on the seashore, basking in the sun.

The Cabo San Lucas Marina
A rectangular, protective dike located between Medano Beach and the peninsula has 288 docks where you can rent boats for fishing or sailing.

Finally, you can't leave without seeing the wonderful, unusually shaped Punta Balandra, one of Los Cabos' distinctive landmarks.

Los Cabos boasts a variety of nightlife, particularly in La Concepcion, north of the Marina. Popular venues include Squid Roe, a dance club, and Kokomo's, a contemporary music bar on the Boulevard Marina.

If you love margaritas then head to Margaritavilla, a festive indoor-outdoor restaurant famed for there jumbo margaritas in 25 different flavors.

In San Jose del Cabo there are many fiesta nights organized at the various hotels.

Small road trips are ideal for roaming the Baja's back country. You can either rent a car for the day or join one of the several tours offered by local tour companies. It is recommended that you not drive after nightfall. Here are some possible itineraries:

- Your first stop could include a stop at the Cabo Plumo National Park for snorkeling and swimming and then head to the lovely colonial villages of Miraflores and Santiago and finally San Bartolo, a lush oasis famous for its fresh fruits and vegetables.

- North east of San Jose del Cabo you will find a sea coast worshiped by fishermen and windsurfers. Travel the 30 km from Punta Pescadero to Punta Colorado along the gorgeous Bahia de Palmas.

- Visit the state's capital of La Paz that has retained its tranquil "old Baja" style despite its size. Here you can enjoy a true provincial Mexican town. Several tour operators working out of La Paz organize grey-whale watching tours during the migratory months of January through March.
