Best St. Lucia Hotels

Saint Lucia is an Eastern Caribbean island nation with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, the Pitons, on its west coast. Its coast is home to volcanic beaches, reef-diving sites, luxury resorts and fishing villages. Trails in the interior rainforest lead to waterfalls like the 15m-high Toraille, which pours over a cliff into a garden. The capital, Castries, is a popular cruise port.

Castries serves as a good base for island exploration. The capital is mostly used as a port of call for cruise ships and only a few museums and attractions can be found. But since the island is quite small, everything is close by and easily accessible. This is a destination for nature lovers. There are so many parks and natural reserves to see, as well as gardens, old sugar plantations and an incredible marine life to discover if you go diving or snorkelling.

This capital city is very modern, but still retains a certain colonial charm and it is surrounded by lush green hills. There is also a very vibrant and colourful market, lovely waterfront restaurants and great shops. The resorts are located nearby in Marigot Bay and Rodney Bay, along the gorgeous beaches filled with activities.

Beaches

saint lucia hotelsAnse Chastanet offers amazing snorkelling and diving opportunities. Lush tropical hills frame this beach with dark sand. The colourful fishing boats really make it picture perfect.

Anse Cochon has unusual black sand and can only be reached by either boat or on a one mile road. With its close by reefs, this beach is wonderful for diving and snorkelling, not to mention swimming.

Anse des Pitons has imported white sand to cover its natural black sand. The background offers fabulous views.

Balenbouche Estate has trails leading to the Balenbouche River which has secluded beaches.

Laborie Beach is a short distance from Morne Le Blanc.

Marigot Beach is reached by ferry and offers a beautiful beach with the occasional palm tree. The surf is calm and great for families.

Pigeon Point is a lovely beach within the Pigeon Island National Historic Park.

Reduit Beach is considered by most as the best beach of the island with its long stretch of golden sand.

Sab-Wee-Sha Beach is another great secluded beach.

Vigie Beach is very nice and is located right along side the George F. L. Charles Airport runway.

Attractions & Sights

Take the informative one hour Castries Heritage Walk which will bring the history of Castries and the diverse architecture to life. See also the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and the Derek Walcott Square, one of two Nobel laureates from St Lucia. The Government House, halfway up Morne Fortune, is the official residence of the governor-general. It houses Le Pavillion Royal Museum, which exhibits historical photographs and documents, artifacts, crockery, silverware, medals, and awards (by appointment only).

The Vigie Lighthouse offers an excellent view of the coastline and has ruins of a small powder magazine built in 1784.

Just outside the capital is the Folk Research Centre which is housed in a 19th century colonial building. The centre’s goal is to preserve and promote St Lucia’s cultural heritage.

The Fond Latisab Creole Park is a community where you can experience traditional practices, like preparing cassava bread, cooking on macambou leaves, catching crayfish in the river and wood sawing to traditional St Lucian music.

Latille Waterfall and Gardens offers an agricultural learning experience amongst the tropical garden of fruits, herbs and plants. There is also a 20ft waterfall with a water basin where you can take a refreshing dip.

Pigeon Island National Park, Museum and Interpretive Centre is a spot that has played several roles throughout the island’s history. First settled by the Amerindians, it later became a pirate hideout and later a military base. The remaining stone ruins are believed to have been the kitchen, hospital and barracks of the army base.

The St Lucia Distillers Limited distillery offers the Rhythm of Rum Tour which will introduce you to the history of rum, complete with a detailed distillery tour and a chance to sample some of our rums and liqueurs.

Nightlife

On Friday nights, the village of Gros Islet hosts a weekly jump up party, popular with locals and visitors alike. Also every Friday you can attend the Anse La Raye Fish Fry BBQ or the Dennery Fish Fiesta on Saturdays.

Themed parties are hosted by most big resorts on various evenings. A show and live calypso bands are usually presented. St Lucia does not offer a very lively club scene but two recommendations would be Indies and The Late Lime in Rodney Bay.

The Brig Unicorn Pirate Sail, a real pirate ship movie prop, features tours around St Lucia to notorious pirate coves and includes a tour of the drive-in volcano.

Side Trips

Soufrière, located in the southwest side of the island, was the islands original capital. It was first colonized by the French in 1746 and their influence still reflects in the building's architecture and colourful murals near the market. Its name was inspired by the nearby Pitons and sulphur springs. It really is a beautiful town to take a stroll in.

Vieux-Fort is at the southern most tip of St Lucia. It offers a panoramic view, where the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet, and on a clear day you may even view St Vincent. The Maria Islands Nature Park Preserve is nearby as well.

Anse La Raye, Gros Islet and Choiseul are two very quaint fishing villages. Choiseul is also home to the Arts and Crafts Development Centre and offers great shopping opportunities.

Several Plantations Houses can be visited throughout the island. Testifying to the islands past economic and agricultural development, they make for an educational and enriching experience. The Fond d'Or Nature Historic Park, the Fond Doux Estate and the Mourne Coubaril and the Marquis Estates are some of the best to see.
